The <voice-direction> element
Parent element: <voice-directions>
The <voice-direction> element distinguishes between upper and lower voices on a staff. This information is typically used to generate default stem directions when the stems are otherwise unspecified. Each <voice-direction> element associates a stem direction (up/down) with a voice/staff combination. The staff attribute is useful for cross-staff voices where stem direction is different per staff - this value can be omitted for single-staff parts. The <note/stem> value overrides the direction introduced by <voice-direction>. If no <voice-direction> element is present for a voice, its direction is unspecified and application-dependent.
